For his success as a brand strategist — with clients that include Budweiser — the Toronto-based alumnus was named to Marketing Magazine’s Top 30 under 30.

Published October 4, the list recognizes — in the publication’s words — “brilliant young men and women who’ve already done much in their few years of business.”

The Department of Communication Studies graduate, who turned 30 shortly after the list was published, discusses his work and cracking the list.

What are your thoughts on making Marketing Magazine’s Top 30?

I’m ecstatic. The most exciting aspect, to me, is the company I share on the list. It’s an amazing group of young people who are already so accomplished in the field of marketing.

How did you end up at Google?

I worked for an agency called Mosaic, where I helped develop Budweiser’s music program, before joining Google. I was actually fired from one of the first jobs I held after graduating Concordia. It was one of the best things to happen to me — it made me consider other opportunities.

What’s the corporate environment like at Google?

It probably lives up to what most people expect. Everything is designed to inspire creativity and innovation. It’s conducive to building insight for our clients — a big focus of my work is helping brands build a presence on YouTube, which is owned by Google.

What’s your advice to fellow Communication Studies graduates and students?

My advice is to be open to change and failure. Find a mentor in your field who will help you. My career really started to develop once I was able to find leaders willing to help me.
