New chillers will help heat LB Building

The J.W. McConnell Library Building’s central cooling plant is being replaced by a cleaner and greener system

The J.W. McConnell Library (LB) Building’s central cooling plant, which has been in place since 1992, is currently being replaced by a cleaner and greener system comprised of highly efficient chillers.

A new heat exchanger will allow for effective heat recovery and recycling of heat by warming incoming air. The new, durable stainless-steel cooling towers will also be considerably more efficient.

Because the work requires the shutdown of the chillers, heating will be sourced from the neighbouring Henry F. Hall Building. Students, faculty and staff may find it a bit cool when the outdoor temperature drops below -25 C, and are encouraged to dress extra warmly on those frigid days.

Passersby will also notice a temporary pedestrian pathway surrounding the LB Building’s sidewalks on De Maisonneuve Boulevard and Bishop Street. All entrances will remain open.

Questions? Please call the Service Centre at 514-848-2424, ext. 2400.
