Important notice for students about Late DISC for winter term

Students should be aware of their responsibilities when making requests for late academic withdrawal (Late DISC)
April 20, 2012
|

While the majority of Concordia students and departments has been unaffected by recent protests against the Quebec government’s planned increase in tuition fees, there are a minority of cases where significant or persistent disruptions have occurred.

In the courses most impacted, the university has worked, and will continue to work, with departments to arrive at appropriate accommodations within the framework of existing academic policies and regulations.

Some students have not attended the last few weeks of the term and are unable to make up coursework this term. The university would like to remind students that there are established procedures if a student wishes to apply after the deadline to formally discontinue and withdraw from a course or course(s) without academic penalty (DISC). The University Calendar indicates that the deadline for a DISC is usually after the eighth week of classes of their term for winter courses.

Student responsibilities

  • Students are encouraged to discuss all options with their professor before requesting to discontinue a course.
  • Students should carefully consider the request for a Late DISC from their course or course(s).
  • No matter the outcome of the request, students are still financially responsible for the payment of tuition and other fees related to the course.
  • If a student is discontinuing a required program course, this course will have to be re-taken.
  • Undergraduate students should verify the Academic Schedule online for the next academic year to verify that, if it is a required course, it will be offered.
  • Graduate Students should consult with their program on the availability and schedule of future graduate level courses.
  • Discontinuing a course does not guarantee a space the next time the course is offered or in subsequent terms.
  • Once the request for a Late DISC has been granted, it cannot be reversed. The DISC notation will remain on the student’s academic record, but is not considered in the calculation of the GPA.
  • A request to be re-instated into the course and to complete the assigned work for a final grade and credit will not be granted following a successful request for Late DISC.

Application Process:

Undergraduate students wishing to be considered for a Late DISC should complete a Student Request Form and submit the form to their home department or Faculty as appropriate. The completed request form must indicate the reasons for the request and provide relevant supporting documentation. Undergraduate Student Request Forms are found on the MyConcordia portal, under the link Student Administrative Affairs, UG Student Requests.

Graduate Students can get the Student Request Form from their department.

The decision to grant the retroactive withdrawal is made by the Student Request Committee for undergraduate students, or by the School of Graduate Studies for graduate students. The instructor is not involved in the DISC decision process and will submit the earned grade using the available work, so students should make every effort to complete their courses in case the DISC is not granted.

Information from the Undergraduate Calendar, Section 16.1.6

“It is the student’s responsibility to meet all deadlines and follow all necessary steps to withdraw from a course or courses, or from the University. Not attending classes or informing an instructor of anintent to withdraw does not constitute official withdrawal. It is not mandatory for an instructor to provide students with any evaluation or feedback of their progress in a course before the withdrawal deadline. Students who do not properly withdraw before the published deadlines, and who do not complete assigned work, tests or exams, will receive failing grades. ”

“DISC (Discontinued)
The DISC withdrawal notation remains on a student’s academic record and does not affect the student’s GPA. However, the student is financially responsible for the payment of all tuition and other fees pertaining to the course. The DISC deadline is usually after the eighth week of classes of the term for fall and winter courses. ”

Information from the Graduate Calendar, Section Academic Regulations
“Discontinued (DISC) is used to indicate that the student withdrew from the course in question before the withdrawal deadline. Discontinued courses and notations are recorded on official transcripts. ”
