Hot art in cold months

Concordia artists heat things up in January and February

Whether it’s dance, theatre, visual art or mixed media, Concordia student and faculty artists offer warm options for the cold early-winter months.

Art galleries

Concordia’s Faculty of Fine Arts (FOFA) Gallery presents an exhibition of works by Christopher Moore (assistant professor and graduate program director in the Department of Design and Computation Arts), Jeanie Riddle (alumna, studio arts), Maria Ezcurra (PhD student, art education) and Sarah Gotowka (MFA student, studio arts). With a vernissage on Thursday, January 12 from 5 to 7 p.m., the exhibition is free for the duration of the show.

Where: Room EV 1.715, Engineering, Computer Science and Visual Arts Integrated Complex (1515 Ste-Catherine St. W.), Sir George Williams Campus
 
The Leonard and Bina Ellen Art Gallery features Traffic, an exhibit on conceptual art in Canada from 1965 to 1980.  Part One of this travelling exhibition comprises works from Montreal, Toronto, Guelph and London, Ont. Part Two reveals conceptual art from Halifax, Vancouver, the Prairies and the Arctic.

 When: Friday, January 13 to Saturday, February 25 (Part One), Friday, March 16 (Part Two). The gallery is open from Tuesday to Friday from noon to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m.
Where: Ellen Art Gallery, Ground floor of the J.W. McConnell Library Building (1400 De Maisonneuve Blvd. W.), Sir George Williams Campus
 
The annual exhibition of ceramics at the VAV Gallery showcases undergraduate students’ works, and admission is free. 

When: Monday, February 6 to Friday, February 24, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Where: VAV Gallery, Ground floor of the Visual Arts Building (1395 René-Lévesque Blvd.), Sir George Williams Campus

Dance
The Department of Contemporary Dance continues its ongoing performance series Studio 7, with students unveiling their works-in-progress.

There will be a live broadcast on the dance website, but Concordia fine arts students who wish to be part of the action should head down to the Department of Contemporary Dance to sign up.

When: Friday, January 20 at 8 p.m.
Where: Room MB 7.265, John Molson School of  Business Building (1450 Guy St.), Sir George Williams Campus

Theatre
The Concordia Department of Theatre unveils its latest collective creation Theatre_____Business: Fill Us In. Written by the students of instructor Annabel Soutar and directed by part-time instructor Harry Standjofski, the play involves the struggle of theatre versus business with reverberations of the Occupy movement and arts funding in Canada.

Music
Music professor Craig Morrison presents California Dreamin’: Music from the Golden State. The 15th annual Roots of Rock and Roll concert will feature several bands covering music by the Beach Boys, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Ricky Nelson, The Mamas and the Papas, Janis Joplin, the Doors, Jefferson Airplane and more. 

Ticket prices and purchase locations are available on the Department of Music website.

When: Friday, February 10 and Saturday, February 11 at 8 p.m.
Where: Oscar Peterson Concert Hall, Loyola Campus (7141 Sherbrooke St. W.)

Ensembles of jazz studies faculty will present original compositions and jazz classics on February 16. Concordia students get in free with a valid student ID. Faculty and staff tickets are $10, available at the door.
