The project to replace the escalators in the Henry F. Hall Building is well under way. The work is contained behind temporary walls installed in the lobby, on the mezzanine and floors nine through 12.

The first escalator between the lobby and the mezzanine will be delivered in late April. To access the machinery, a slab of concrete will be removed from the floor in the lobby inside the construction area. Because this work will be noisy, it has been scheduled outside business hours. The size of the new escalator requires that it enter the building via a window. This work will occur over a weekend and some temporary disruptions on Bishop Street and De Maisonneuve Boulevard may be necessary.

The emergency response plan will be updated at each phase of the project as the temporary walls interfere with normal evacuation routes. Important changes to the plan will be posted on NOW under notices.

The project also spurred a re-evaluation of all the pay phones in the building because the walls on which they are installed are to be refinished. Based on usage data furnished by Bell Canada, it was decided to remove all the pay phones except those in the lobby. Students can use the free telephones, located on the seventh floor, offered by the Concordia Student Union.

Access to the loading bay will be restricted to those with a card readerapproved by Property Manager Pat Pietromonaco at 514-848-2424, ext. 3758. Access to the freight elevators remains tightly scheduled by Distribution Services to ensure timely delivery of the new escalator equipment.

The passenger elevator that was out of service has been repaired. Both passenger elevators are fully operational, though card access is required for floors B1, M (D.B. Clarke Theatre), B2 and floors two through six. Requests for faculty and staff access cards should go to Security. Students with disabilities can contact the Access Centre for Students with Disabilities.

Anyone visiting the upper floors of the Hall Building should plan for slower circulation while the work continues.

Any comments or questions should be directed to the Service Centre at 514-848-2424, ext. 2400.
