Ketra Schmitt

Women in STEM fields
Posted on December 6, 2017

Ketra Schmitt is an Associate Professor, in the Centre for Engineering in Society. Her research is focused on systems modeling, and its application to policy solutions in regulated systems. Working collaboratively with partners in many institutions throughout Canada and the U.S, Professor Schmitt’s team used this analysis to look at the economic and societal impacts of terrorism and the health impacts of seafood consumption.

Following the release of recent census data about employment in Canada, Professor Schmitt provided an interview to the Canadian Press about women in STEM fields. The piece looked at why STEM fields continue to be dominated by men, despite continued efforts towards gender parity. The piece was then reprinted in 81 different publications including Huffington Post Canada, CTV News, The Financial Post, Mclean’s and local newspapers from coast to coast.
