#YesAllWomen and the Santa Barbara Shooting

On Saturday, May 24 a 22-year-old man, Elliot Rodger, went on a shooting spree in Isla Vista Santa Barbara, California. Following the release of Rodger’s video diary, which revealed that one of the motivations for his rampage was his sense of male sexual entitlement – social media erupted with the #YesAllWomen hashtag. By Monday, May 26 the hashtag had been attached to 1.2 million tweets as both women and men highlight the daily sexual harassment, rape and misogyny women face.

Samantha Thrift, assistant professor in the Department of Communication Studies, can share her expertise on feminist social media campaigns. Fenwick McKelvey, assistant professor in the Department of Communication Studies, can discuss male chauvinist culture on the web and the recent success of hashtag activism.
