Egyptian court sentences hundreds to death

On Tuesday, April 29 an Egyptian court sentenced Mohammed Badie, the leader of the banned Muslim Brotherhood, and hundreds of supporters of former Islamist President Mohamed Morsy to death. In an attempt to crackdown on the Islamist movement ahead of next month’s elections, the same court handed down a final capital punishment ruling for 37 others. Kyle Matthews, senior deputy director of the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies (MIGS), can weigh in on the human rights aspect of these sentences and the current political climate in Egypt.
