1. UN investigation confirms human rights violations committed by ADF rebels

(Agence Congolaise Presse, government-owned news agency, article dated 25 May 2016 in French) Une mission d’enquête des Nations Unies confirme des crimes horribles commis par les ADF en RDC

  • A special investigation mission of the UN for Human Rights, deployed from 13 - 22 May 2016 in Beni, North Kivu, confirmed that serious violations of humanitarian law were committed by rebels, of Alliance of Democratic Forces (ADF), against civilians, including women and children.
  • This regarded attacks on villages in eastern DRC, in North Kivu and partly in the province of Ituri, from 28 February to 22 May 2016.
  • According to the report, at least 76 civilians were killed and more than 17 abducted people. 
2. Moïse Katumbi evacuated for medical attention in South Africa

  • Governor of the former Katanga, Moïse Katumbi, was evacuated in a plane May 20 evening to South Africa for proper care.
  • Previously, hospitalized in Lubumbashi, he was charged with "undermining the internal and external security of the state.”
  • He has been placed under provisional arrest warrant.
3. Operation “Usalama” successful against the ADF rebels

  • Nine days after the launch of the "Usalama" operation against Ugandan rebels of the ADF, FARDC have taken over occupation, of several of their camps.
  • The FARDC and MONUSCO coalition will continue to increase its pressure on the ADF in Beni. 
4. Political demonstration in Kinshasa: 35 police officers injured

(Radio-Okapi, independent/privately-owned newspaper, article dated 26 May 2016, in French) Marche des opposants : 35 policiers blessés à Kinshasa, selon la PNC

  • Demonstration took place with thousands of participants marching in Kinshasa.
  • Supporters of the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS), Union for the Congolese Nation (UNC), the movement for the liberation of the Congo (MLC) and others were present.
  • 35 Congolese police officers were injured due to party clashes. 
5. Political demonstration in Goma: 1 dead and 8 injured

  • Opposition march which took place in Goma, escalated to a fight between protestors and police, leaving 8 injured and 1 dead.
  • At least 32 youths were arrested.
