The Centre for the Study of Learning and Performance (CSLP) is pleased to welcome Dr. Katrine Roussel as its newest member. A professor in the Département de didactique des langues at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), Dr. Roussel brings deep expertise in the didactics of writing and French language education at the secondary level. She will also join the CSLP Executive Committee as the representative for Theme 1.1: Didactique/Curriculum and Pedagogy.
Dr. Roussel’s research explores the teaching and learning of writing, with a focus on writing processes, syntax, and the evaluation of written texts. Her work frequently bridges theory and classroom practice, with a growing emphasis on the use of generative artificial intelligence in education. She is currently leading "Ambient Text – An Exploratory Study on the Potential of Generative Artificial Intelligence Systems for the Teaching of Writing at the Secondary Level" (Texte ambiant – Une recherche exploratoire sur le potentiel des systèmes d'intelligence artificielle générative pour la didactique de l'écriture au secondaire) and concluding a project with Sylvie Marcotte (UQO) titled "The Evaluation of Writing at the Heart of the French Classroom: An Eco-collaborative Study to Understand Teaching Practices in Quebec Secondary Schools" (L'évaluation de l'écriture au cœur de la classe de français : une recherche écocollaborative pour comprendre les pratiques enseignantes au secondaire québécois).
Earlier this spring, on March 20, the CSLP’s UQAM satellite office (CEAP UQAM) hosted a presentation by Dr. Roussel examining common syntactic errors in student writing. Her talk drew on modern grammar and the concept of syntactic maturation, offering insight into how writing skills evolve and how educators can support students’ syntactic development—particularly in digital contexts.
Dr. Roussel’s arrival marks a dynamic addition to the CSLP community and reinforces its ongoing commitment to research-informed pedagogy.
