Artistic director of the group Gypsy Kumbia, Carmen Ruiz, will lead spectators, conference presenters and attendees in a workshop/dance lesson in Colombian Cumbia. The goal of this movement-based workshop is to educate attendees on the Afro-Caribbean roots of the music and dance rhythms and their origins in the forced cultural collision of African and Amerindian slaves under the Spanish empire.

This decolonial and disinformational approach to music and dance education makes for a total body educational experience--- Total Physical Response, in pedagogical theory---a common educational practice in foreign language teaching.
