Socks are for most people disposable, expendable pieces of our everyday wardrobe, that best exhibit clothing waste. Socks have a short timeline as they are considered useless once holey or having lost its pair.

This workshop seeks to consider sustainable living by learning slow stitching to repair used socks. In learning how to darn, we will host conversations about care and mindful consumption. This workshop is an opportunity to use craft as a means of expanding connections with each other (a principle of craftivism, defined by Betty Greer) as we actively practice and preserve an ancient skill of handwork.

This event is part of the MDES22 Research-Creation Show.

How can you participate? Attend in person, (note, there is a maximum of 25 people permitted in the space) or online by registering for the Zoom meeting or watching live on YouTube.

Have questions? Send them to info.4@concordia.ca

Material List

1. A holey sock

2. Darning needle (typically larger than a sewing needle and has a bigger 'eye' (hole) to thread larger thread)

3. Thread: When darning, you'll want a thread content that is similar to the fabric content of the object you are mending. For example, wool thread for a wool sock.

For this workshop, however, let's improvise! Grab whatever type of thread you have around the house (embroidery floss is a great option for beginners).

4. Scissors

5. Darning Egg / Lightbulb / Smooth egg-sized rock / Billiard ball / Water bottle
