This is a public lecture hosted by the Concordia Classics Student's Association (CCSA). Dr. Keven Ouellet (UdeM) will present a lecture entitled, Macro and Micro Approaches to Northern Greek Fortifications. All are invited.

Abstract:

From the 8th century BC onwards, Greek city-states established many colonies between the Thermaic Gulf and the Evros River in Northern Greece. Often located on hostile territory where the land is a very important source of wealth, these new cities have ensured their safety and stability by quickly establishing defense systems around their settlements. Throughout the periods, several powers have also taken interest in the northern Aegean territories and marked the military landscape of the region by fortifying their own urban centers. This lecture will address the systematic study of these fortifications on a macro scale before delving into the micro through the study of the new excavation on the fortification of the ancient settlement of Kerdylion.
