In the York Vitrines and Courtyard, Where you have not first of all to uproot a whole forest brings together Friesen’s recent works in video, photography, and wood carving. The exhibition works through a series of graftings that amplify displaced artistic, architectural, and political histories of Soviet Kazakhstan. Grounded in a developing notion of the dispersed monumental, the works trace forms of dislocated historical memory through unofficial archives, land, architecture, and sound. From Stalin-era repressions to post-war Soviet modernism, Friesen approaches histories of exile, incarceration, and dislocation in the former Karlag gulag region of Karaganda, and in Almaty, Kazakhstan’s former capital. 

The exhibition will be presented in the York Vitrines and Courtyard until November 20.

Dans les Vitrines du corridor York et la Court extérieur, Where you have not first of all to uproot a whole forest rassemble les œuvres récentes de Friesen en vidéo, en photographie et en sculpture sur bois. L’exposition se déploie à travers une série de greffes qui amplifient des histoires déplacées, qu’elles soient artistiques, architecturales ou politiques, dans le Kazakhstan soviétique. Ancrées dans une conception émergente du monumental dispersé, les œuvres retracent des formes de mémoire historique délocalisée à travers des archives non officielles, le territoire, l’architecture et le son. Allant des répressions de l’époque stalinienne au modernisme soviétique d’après-guerre, Friesen aborde les histoires d’exil, d’incarcération et de déplacement dans l’ancienne région du goulag du Karlag, à Karaganda, ainsi qu’à Almaty, l’ancienne capitale du Kazakhstan. 

L’exposition sera présentée dans les Vitrines du corridor York et la Court extérieur, jusqu’au 20 novembre.

The FOFA Gallery is the primary venue dedicated to showcasing the current artistic and research practices of the Faculty of Fine Arts. Through exhibitions, publications, and events, the gallery makes public the work of Concordia alumni, faculty and staff.
