It's not just empty promises. Concordia is acting now to become more energy efficient — and Hydro-Québec has taken notice.

In recognition of the university’s leadership in institutional energy efficiency, Hydro-Québec has invited Concordia to join the Alliance of exemplary buildings.

The province-wide initiative highlights organizations that are making measurable progress in optimizing energy use across large commercial and institutional buildings — supporting a more grid-friendly energy transition and lowering CO₂ emissions.

Concordia has now formally signed on to the alliance as part of its long-standing commitment to sustainability and its campus-wide PLAN/NET ZERØ initiative.

“Concordia is proud to join like-minded organizations in building a sustainable future for all Quebecers as part of the alliance,” says Concordia President Graham Carr. “This important initiative underscores that dynamic forms of collaboration offer the best solutions to current and future climate challenges.”

Actions already underway

The invitation reflects Concordia’s ongoing efforts to optimize energy use across its campuses, led by Facilities Management and the Office of Sustainability and advanced through the phased implementation of the PLAN/NET ZERØ project. Together, they have introduced a range of measures to reduce peak demand on Quebec’s electrical grid.

They include:

  • Retrofitting lighting systems and limiting HVAC operation outside peak occupancy hours
  • Adjusting building temperature ranges to reduce overall energy demand
  • Prioritizing strategic upgrades to building systems, including the gradual integration of energy-efficient equipment and automation, where feasible
  • Recommissioning energy systems to improve performance

Participation in the alliance will support these efforts by connecting Concordia with a network of institutions taking measurable action to reduce energy consumption.

The initiative supports Quebec’s broader goal of reducing pressure on the electrical grid. It also strengthens the province’s leadership in renewable energy and climate action.

“This recognition is a testament to years of cross-departmental focus and collaboration to make Concordia’s buildings more energy efficient,” says Stéphane Chayer, strategic advisor to the president.

“It’s also a clear example of how PLAN/NET ZERØ is acting as a catalyst — aligning operational change with the university’s sustainability goals while supporting a more responsible role in Quebec’s energy transition.”
