Concordia remains tops under 50 in Canada

Two new rankings again place the university among the best young institutions in North America, while the EMBA program jumps six spots
February 25, 2022

Concordia is a couple of years shy of its 50th birthday in 2024 — which means it’s still in the first flush of its youth relative to many other universities worldwide. And up against fellow young North American institutions, Concordia continues to excel.

Times Higher Education Young University Rankings

In the 2022 edition of the Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Rankings, just out, Concordia placed number one in Canada for the fifth straight year and fifth among newer North American universities.

George Mason University in Virginia, Rush University in Illinois, University of California, Merced, and Florida International University round out the top five. Concordia ranked 177th out of 539 institutions in all.

The Young University Rankings assess universities worldwide under 50 years old, ones that “unlike many of the world’s top-ranked universities, do not have centuries of history or tradition.”

The Young University Rankings measure schools in five pillars — teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income — the same as the overall THE World University Rankings (WUR); however, these are recalibrated to reflect the special characteristics of young universities.

The new THE ranking are based on the 2022 WUR, released in September 2021, where Concordia landed in the 601–800 category for the fourth consecutive year despite a continuously growing number of ranked institutions. That places the university among the top 48 per cent internationally.

Among its Canadian peers, the university advanced two spots to 20th out of 30.

In the 2022 WUR, Concordia’s scores moved up in four of the five ranked pillars — teaching, research, industry income and international outlook — and decreased in one — citations — compared to 2021.

QS World University Rankings of the Top 50 Under 50

In the newly released QS World University Rankings of the Top 50 Under 50 2021, Concordia placed first in North America for the third year running and in the 61–70 range overall for the fourth consecutive time.

The QS Top 50 under 50 highlights the teaching and research performance of the world’s academic institutions founded or established in the last 50 years. The list includes both the “Top 50 under 50” and the “Next 100 under 50,” totalling 150.

Its rankings are derived from the same year’s QS World University Rankings (WUR). In 2021, Concordia placed 477th out of 1,002 institutions, among the top 41 per cent.

The WUR considers six indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per faculty member, faculty-student ratio, proportion of international students, and proportion of international faculty members.

CEO Magazine’s 2022 Global MBA Rankings

Concordia’s John Molson Executive MBA program moved up six places from last year in CEO Magazine’s newly released 2022 Global MBA Rankings. The EMBA program now sits at 27th out of 84 EMBA programs reviewed internationally. It also ranks second in Canada and is the only Quebec university featured.

CEO Magazine’s rankings aim to identify schools that combine exceptional quality with great return on investment. Launched in 2012, the annual Global MBA Ranking survey evaluates schools based on the following criteria: quality of faculty, international diversity, class size, accreditation, faculty-to-student ratio, price, international exposure, work experience, professional development, gender parity and delivery methods.

“Since its inception, the Executive MBA program has been a constant source of pride for us,” says Anne-Marie Croteau, dean of the John Molson School of Business. “As one of the first EMBA programs in the country, it continues to set the trend for quality executive education.”

Additionally, the same ranking placed the John Molson MBA Program as a Tier 1 program.
