ARTH 370 Studies in Canadian Art: Black Canadian Art Histories
- Instructor: Dr. Joana Joachim
In this course, we will identify gaps in Canadian art history by examining themes with a focus on Black Canadian art, colonialism, slavery and cultural identity as forms of resistance to colonial narratives that shaped what we know and how we understand art here. We will examine the cultural and historical contributions of Black artists looking at the intersections between Indigenous and Black art history. We will think critically about the disciplines of art history, museology, and curating. Students will develop an understanding of key moments in Black Canadian history and harness skills to discuss art from creative and critical perspectives inclusive of Indigenous art history, gender, race, sexuality and class in those contexts.
