ARTH 381 Feminism and Art History
- Instructor: Dr. Joana Joachim
In this course, students will examine leading figures in feminisms in art history particularly as they relate to the topic of Black women and art in Canada and beyond. Through an overview of the histories of feminisms in art, this course will also examine the cultural, visual and artistic contributions of Black diasporic women and Indigenous women and think critically about their distinct artistic expressions and ways in which they challenge the dominant narratives in art history. Students will explore themes such as museology, curating, resistance, colonialism and art history as they relate to Black feminisms and Indigenous women’s perspectives. Through readings, gallery visits, screenings, discussions and case studies students will consider how Black women in Canada inclusive of Indigenous women artists have developed a rich cultural milieu in response to the ongoing institutional gaps in art history.
