ARTH 400 Advanced Seminar in Art Historical Method: Indigenous Collections

  • Thursdays, 11:45 am-2:30 pm
  • Instructor: Dr. Michelle McGeough

The 1990s were a very important period of time when settler nation states began to examine their relationships with Indigenous people. It has been close to thirty years since the release of the Task Force Report on Museums and the First People. This document outlined a blueprint for change between Canada’s Indigenous people and Canadian Museums. So how are we doing? Has any real changes been made? In this class we will explore how the relationship between Museums and Indigenous people have evolved over time. Through assigned readings, class discussions, and field trips, we will examine the impact the inclusion of Indigenous Knowledge(s) has had in the care of Indigenous collections, curation and museum display practices. We will visit with Indigenous museum professionals and learn about their experiences and what they imagine for the future of this very complicated relationship.
