ARTH 355 Studies in Architecture

  • Tuesdays, 8:45-11:30 am
  • Instructor: Gonzalo Munoz-Vera

This course explores the relationship between architecture and the major forms of media through a historical and critical investigation of the outcomes of these encounters in order to understand both the agency of media in the realm of architecture and vice versa. The course navigates through a series of episodes that examine how architects have implemented diverse media tools and techniques throughout history. In this course, we approach media from a broader perspective, from tools and techniques to how media constructs specific forms of knowledge, embodies historical and political ideologies, and shapes human agency, relationships, labour, value systems, and thought. This course will consider these topics under the umbrella of the human senses—particularly vision—and how humans interact with the different types of media, which impact procedures, processes, and practices inside and outside architecture.
