ARTH 498 Special Topics in Art and Architecture: Realism and Reality-Effects in Western Art since 1839

  • Tuesdays, 11:45 am-14:15 pm
  • Course delivery TBA
  • Instructor: Dr. Martha Langford

This seminar will focus on the different manifestations and understandings of art and literature in relation to realist aspirations, definitions of the real, and everyday experience. A series of case studies, drawing on a range of media, will capture the shifting, often slippery definitions of 'realism' as it conveys and comments on contemporary life.

Considering various concepts of representation involved in creating, defining, and interpreting an artwork, this seminar will interest students of art and society, art and protest, and art and everyday life. Realism is both a style and a strategy.
