Term: This is a part-time position from June, 2024 to March, 2025, with a possibility of extension

Hours: Installation periods last 2 weeks and happen every 6 weeks, working Monday-Friday 10am-5pm. Additional hours between installations will be used for training, based on the applicant’s interests/aptitudes.

Salary: $23 / hour

The FOFA Gallery invites applications for an Assistant Technician, Sustainability. This position aims to give hands-on art installation experience to a recent graduate from a fine arts university program, with a focus on supporting sustainability initiatives at the Gallery. The Assistant Technician, Sustainability will have the opportunity to learn about the inner workings of a small and dynamic university art gallery, and thus gain valuable experience and practical skills.

The ideal candidate will have some knowledge of contemporary arts and culture as well as keen interest in technical/installation work. Graduates who have completed a BFA or MFA in Studio Arts are encouraged to apply; those from related fields or with comparable experience will also be considered.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Assist with all aspects of installing FOFA Gallery exhibitions, including using standard tools such as drills, hammers, levels, saws, etc.
  • Preparing and cleaning the space, resetting after each exhibition: painting, sanding, patching as needed
  • Assist with sustainability initiatives, such as workshops and alternative signage installation
  • Prepare and install AV equipment such as projectors, media players, speakers
  • Maintain a clean working environment, including the gallery and storage spaces
  • Work alongside artists, curators, and technicians to brainstorm and problem-solve
  • Assist with lighting and hanging labels/signage
  • Assist with inventory and disposal of broken/unused/old equipment
  • Assist with tracking supplies and notifying team when they need replacing
  • Other duties as required.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrates interest and/or experience in the field of contemporary art installation
  • Experience working with diverse kinds of art and artists
  • Good spoken English and French in order to communicate effectively with team members artists, Concordia depot staff
  • Superior communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of or interest in the diversity of contemporary visual, media, interdisciplinary and performance art
  • Knowledge of or interest in sustainability practices, as they relate to contemporary art spaces

Eligibility

This position is funded in part through the Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage program, and all applicants must be registered in the YCW candidate pool and meet the current YCW-BCH eligibility criteria. An individual may be eligible for an internship if they:
• Are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible);
• Are legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number);
• Are between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment; and
• Are a college or university graduate (certificate, bachelor's, master's or doctorate).

Note: Priority will be given to graduates that have not previously participated in YCW internship programs and that are unemployed or underemployed.
