Sometimes finding a career path takes a bit of trial and error.

Concordia graduate Cameron Hushyar, BComm 08, has settled into the role of entrepreneur — though not before a detour into the world of accounting.

“I was following my brother’s footsteps when I studied accounting,” says Hushyar, president of Keep Accounting, an online bookkeeping and payroll service company launched in March 2013.

“It wasn’t for me. I switched to finance and haven’t looked back,” says Hushyar, who lives in his hometown of Vancouver.

As a Concordia graduate, Hushyar entered the world of sales where another obstacle was thrown at him.

“I was laid off,” says Hushyar. “In sales, it takes up to three years to build a client base. If I was going to do that again, it would be for my own business.”

Ironically, that business serves accountants. His company taps into the trend of migrating professional services online.

“There’s been a shift from traditional, in-person accounting to online bookkeeping,” says Hushyar. Aimed at smaller businesses, Keep Accounting counts over 100 clients.

“All we’ve done so far has been without marketing,” says Hushyar. His company plans to launch a campaign this month.

Based on their trajectory, Hushyar anticipates close to $1 million in revenue in 2015. Services vary from $295 to $695 per month.
