Angela Karinn: The UX educator

Angela Karinn brings a wealth of knowledge in user experience (UX) to Concordia Continuing Education, where she teaches in the UX Certificate program. Educated in graphic design and self-taught in UI/UX, she landed her first UX role right out of college. That first job allowed her to explore her fascination with how creativity, psychology, and technology intersect in the field. After working in major cities throughout North America, Angela now teaches learners real-world skills to help them grow their career with confidence.
What inspired you to add teaching to your professional work?
Angela Karinn: It’s very rewarding to have a positive impact on people’s lives. It’s not really about design — that just happens to be what I know. I get to share my skills and experience to contribute to the student’s growth. I focus on connecting with them and growing their confidence.
What unique experiences do you bring to your classes at CCE?
AK: I grew up with an educator as a parent. For most of my life, I’d see my mother at the dining room table grading papers. She always made sure to provide useful feedback and never stopped caring about students for her entire career. That stuck with me.
Education and teaching are built into the practice of UX, especially in client-facing roles. Because I work closely with clients, I know how important it is to influence decisions, advocate for the user, and teach people the value of design. Education is half the job of being a designer, and I try to bring this experience into the classroom.
What real-world challenges do you help your students tackle?
AK: Many students come in shy about public speaking and presenting, but their potential is clear. I work with them to build their confidence, always emphasizing that this is their safe space to learn, fail, and try again.
