As part of the first edition of Canada Climate Week Xchange, Porte Parole, in partnership with Concordia University’s Faculty of Fine Arts, presents The Assembly – Energy in Canada, its acclaimed documentary play tackling the polarization around our energy transition.
Based on a real dinner conversation between four Canadians with sharply opposing views about the future of energy, The Assembly – Energy in Canada transforms their words into a gripping work of documentary theatre that reveals the conflict and humanity at the heart of one of today’s most urgent and polarizing issue.
After the performance, the audience is invited to take a seat at the table, joining two of the real-life participants from the play to reflect, question, and imagine new ways of listening across our divides.
The latest episode of Porte Parole’s The Assembly series tackles polarization around Canada’s energy transition. In 2023, four people with starkly opposing views — a Calgary oil and gas entrepreneur, an Indigenous pipeline engineer, a Toronto divestment lobbyist, and a BC climate activist — sat down for an unscripted dinner discussion. Their raw exchange became the foundation for The Assembly – Energy in Canada, a play crafted entirely from their words, capturing the conflict and humanity at the heart of the energy debate.
The Assembly is a documentary theatre series by Porte Parole that brings together real people with sharply opposing views on divisive social issues for an unscripted conversation over dinner. The dialogue — recorded, transcribed, and edited — becomes the verbatim script for a stage play. Since 2018, The Assembly has travelled from Canada to Germany, Brazil, and Lithuania, staging eight editions that each reflect their local context and explore what it takes to find common ground in a polarized world.
