Tillutarniit Film Festival

August 3, 4, and 5, 2017
FOFA Gallery Courtyard

Tillutarniit is an outdoor film festival curated by Isabella-Rose Weetaluktuk, an emerging Inuk curator, filmmaker and artist. The event celebrates Inuit culture with games, prizes, country food, music and film. This year’s program is framed around the animals that are intrinsic to life in the north grouped into three themes for each evening: Netsiq (Seal), Tuktu (Caribou) and Inuk (Person). The seal and the caribou are central to Inuit mythology, storytelling, hunting, clothing, food, art and design. Films will highlight the importance of these animals in relation to the Inuk while drawing attention to current challenges that threaten the Inuit way of life. Stunning cinematography, enthralling narratives will reveal so much about the majestic land, animals and people who define the north.

The event coincides with Présence Autochtone Montreal First Peoples Festival, and in partnership with Terres en vues / Land Insights.

This initiative is made possible by the Community Fund for Canada’s 150th, a collaboration between Canada’s community foundations, Foundation of Greater Montréal, the Government of Canada, and extraordinary leaders from coast to coast to coast.

Women of the Video Collective reenact a traditional women's activity: the use of the qulliq. The qulliq is the seal oil lamp and stove of the old days, the only source of light and warmth. These women tell their stories through words and songs as they install the qulliq in their igloo.

A successful rock band from Greenland? Yes, it's not a lie. In 1973, the Greenlandic Sumé released a debut album, which made it into all the households of Greenland in record time. But Sumé's success was not only due to their catchy rock beat, but also due to the band's ability to put words to the zeitgeist, at a time when Greenlandic culture seemed to be slowly fading away.
