Boreal (detail), Mandi Morgan.

EN

Working with paper cutout animation, Mandi Morgan creates a non-linear allegorical tale depicting the vulnerable tensions between wildlife and human destruction. Taking inspiration from Russian animator Yuriy Norshteyn, Morgan animates between multiple layers of glass to create three-dimensional space. Boreal’s animated universe is the delicate construction of intricately illustrated animal puppets that are assembled with thin wires as their armature. The frail wiring of the puppets becomes their anatomy allowing for the awkward movement of the animals that imbibe them with personality. The fragile assemblage of the puppets echoes the vulnerable relationship that wildlife has within a compromised ecosystem. The paper animation process is itself a tenuous process and mirrors the delicate state of the ecosystem, for the puppets look as though they may fall apart and parish at any given moment.

Morgan's work emphasizes the process of creation, choosing not to work with the traditional model of the storyboard. The tactile and spontaneous procedure of handmade animation enables the artist to become an extension of the worlds she creates with the hope to incorporate elements of humanity within the artwork itself. Boreal is an attempt to process the feelings of helplessness in the artist’s capacity to save the forest and its fragile inhabitants.
