Malaysia Field School

This project-based course explores the future of safety engineering by combining proven system safety methods with cutting-edge AI technologies. Students learn how classical tools such as FMEA, FTA, RBD, PHM, and STPA integrate with modern data-driven approaches—including machine learning, large language models (LLMs), retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and explainable AI (XAI)—to identify hazards, model degradation, and ensure system-level safety. Working in teams, students apply theory to a single, real-world case study that evolves throughout the course, unifying lectures, exercises, and demonstrations into a hands-on learning experience. The program emphasizes practical impact, collaboration, and industry relevance, with a potential aerospace industry site visit currently being arranged.

About the program

This course introduces the principles of safety engineering, with emphasis on the integration of modern data-driven methods such as machine learning (ML), large language models (LLMs), retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and explainable AI (XAI) Students will learn how classical safety analysis methods (FMEA, FTA, RBD, PHM, STPA, etc.) connect with emerging AI techniques for hazard identification, degradation modeling, and system-level safety. The course is project-based: Students will form teams and will work on one case study that will demonstrate the application of the theoretical principles introduced. All the class activities, exercises, and demonstrations are all designed to contribute to a single, continuous team project. Deliverables will be submitted as per the schedule.

NOTE: University is actively working on securing an AERO Industry site visit.
