SPACELAB
August 12 - 22, 2019
Welcome to Space Concordia’s SPACELAB!
SPACELAB showcased the work done at Space Concordia, the University’s grassroots space agency. Space Concordia brings together students from all faculties who create advanced engineering projects, get hands-on learning opportunities, and are part of a rich, welcoming environment where anyone can learn about space. From rockets to rovers to satellites, their ambitious projects reflect the thriving and passionate space community in Montreal and beyond.
From August 12-22, SPACELAB invited you to take a small step into space with installations, workshops, and events for people of all ages. Visitors came to 4TH SPACE to engage and share with the students who design, build and present Space Concordia’s projects at national and international aerospace competitions.
ARCHIVE
Crafting Activities
Everyday during the SPACELAB programming, visitors could stop by to build their own Mars Habitat in the manufacturing zone.
Transforming Social Order at the Margins of Space
On August 19th, Dr. Stefanie Ruel gave a public talk on the past, present, and future of women in the Canadian space industry.
Aleksandr CubeSat
The Spacecraft division of Space Concordia has built four CubeSats, compact standardized satellites, and will build a fifth to launch from the International Space Station in 2021 as part of the Canadian CubeSat Project. This CubeSat was worked on from 2012 to 2018 and was displayed as part of the SPACELAB programming.
Revolutionary Rover Wheels
On August 20th, Dr. Krzysztof Skonieczny gave a presentation on planetary rovers, developing rover wheels, and his involvement in the Mars 2020 mission with NASA.
The ASTRO Rover: Space Concordia Robotics Division
For the last nine years, Space Concordia has grown from a single satellite project to a well-rounded landscape of advanced projects and diverse people. Over 100 undergraduate and graduate students collaborate across the society’s four divisions: Spacecraft, Rocketry, Robotics, and Special Projects. During the programming at 4TH SPACE, the Robotics divisions showcased the ASTRO rover.
Space Concordia Rocketry Division
During the SPACELAB programming, Space Concordia exhibited their test stand trailer used for developing liquid rocket engines.
Aleksandr CubeSat
Here, you can see the CSDC-4 team working on their CubeSat Aleksandr. The Spacecraft division of Space Concordia has built four CubeSats, compact standardized satellites, and will build a fifth to launch from the International Space Station in 2021 as part of the Canadian CubeSat Project.
Astrophotography
In addition to carrying out engineering projects, members of Space Concordia bring to light the many aspects of space including medicine, photography, and education. On August 19th, Sara Quackenbush gave an Astrophotography 101 talk at 4TH SPACE.
