A $15 million gift from Mark Pathy has established the Mark Pathy Space Institute at Concordia’s Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science.

The Institute supports space engineering research and technology, fosters innovation and trains highly qualified talent in collaboration with industry and government.

Strengthening the space sector

Space systems support communications, navigation, environmental monitoring and national infrastructure, while also requiring launch capabilities. As global investment accelerates, the sector is evolving quickly.

The Institute positions Concordia within this growth by connecting engineering and computer science research, industry and government to develop practical solutions. Based in Montreal, one of the world’s leading aerospace hubs, it builds on Concordia’s expertise and aligns with industry and public priorities.

An integrated approach to space research

The Institute brings together four core areas within a single space engineering research environment:

  • propulsion and launch technologies
  • spacecraft systems including satellites, rovers and robotics
  • human health in space
  • sustainable space technologies

This integrated approach supports more connected and applied work across the space mission lifecycle.

From research to application

The Institute connects researchers, industry and public partners to tackle real-world challenges within the global space sector ecosystem.

It supports:

  • joint research and innovation aligned with industry needs
  • development of new technologies, intellectual property and their commercialization
  • testing and validation through dedicated facilities
  • knowledge transfer toward practical applications

By combining research, innovation, infrastructure and collaboration, the Institute helps move ideas toward implementation.

Training the next generation

The Institute trains engineers and researchers for the space sector through experiential learning and collaboration.

It supports:

  • student involvement in research and innovation projects
  • hands-on experience aligned with industry needs
  • pathways to graduate research and careers in the space ecosystem

Graduate students and postdoctoral researchers benefit from access to research opportunities and specialized facilities.
