CAROLINE GAGNON

Fetish Territories

York Vitrines

September 12 – October 21, 2022

Exhibition description

My work takes shape through a study of materiality: whether that be natural, related to my artistic practice, or from the everyday. With Fetish Territories, I look closely at my surroundings, at the gestures that give rhythm to my daily life, at time, and at the phenomena which transform material. Over the course of my years practicing lithography, I have maintained an interest in printmaking as a process —as an experience more so than an outcome. I have found myself drawn to the repetition of gestures and the material qualities throughout these transformations. The time and presence required during the printing process have been, for me, a type of meditation. It is this contemplative and meditative state which links my artistic practice with my everyday life. I am interested in processes that are long-term: gardening, drawing, harvesting, printing, painting, cooking. This led me to question the meaning and value assigned to our gestures. How can one differentiate artistic gestures from everyday gestures? Are they executed with the same attention, and do they prioritize manual craftmanship with the same intention? This question is the premise of my exhibition Fetish Territories, a multidisciplinary work which takes shape as installations where print art, video projections, ink wash and natural materials coalesce.
