Artist statement

"In response to the work of three significant artists, (Harsha, Locke, Shonibare) I will explore the wider issues around migration, the globalized garment industry, the marginalization of individual freedom within the global market economy, the use of cloth as a cultural symbol and political tool, and the "romance" of unity through difference."

About the artist

Janis Jefferies is an artist, writer and curator. She is Professor of Visual Arts and Research, Artistic Director of Goldsmiths Digital Studios and co director of CAST, the Centre for Social and Creative Technologies at Goldsmiths, University of London, UK.  She is an associate researcher with Hexagram (Institute of Media, Arts and Technologies, Montreal, Canada) on two projects - electronic textiles and new forms of media communication in cloth.  Janis Jefferies has published extensively on labored cloth, textiles, hybridity in contemporary art, technology, craft and digital cultures.
