Why It Matters

Building safer campuses takes all of us.

Creating a safer, more respectful campus environment requires a shared understanding of consent, healthy relationships, bystander intervention, and survivor support. Meaningful prevention efforts help foster a culture where everyone understands their role in contributing to a positive campus experience.

It Takes All of Us is a comprehensive, customizable online training program that helps post-secondary institutions strengthen sexual violence prevention efforts, build awareness, and support safer campus communities.

By providing consistent, accessible education across campus, the program helps institutions create lasting impact in three key areas:

What’s included

Four progressive modules, each building on the last – from consent and bystander intervention through to systemic oppression and the formal complaints process.

Core module

Introductory module (40-60 minutes)

Divided into four sections, this module brings essential visibility and awareness about sexual violence to members of a community with the objective of building a culture of safety and respect.

Section 1: Exploring the definition of sexual violence, root causes and challenges of preconceived ideas about sexual violence and impacts on survivors.

Section 2: Defining sexual consent healthy relationships.

Sections 3 & 4: Learning about bystander intervention as well as foundational, trauma-informed principles related to supporting survivors through a disclosure.

Add-on modules

Each module takes about 20–30 minutes.

This module explores intersectional power dynamics as a root cause of sexual violence. Using a tool called the Anti-Oppression tree, participants learn about how intersecting systems of oppression such as sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, and ableism aid in understanding the lived experiences of survivors living within these systems of oppression. Using scenarios depicting various intersections, participants explore these dynamics to further strengthen understanding through experiential learning.

This module focuses on another root cause of sexual violence, the concept of rape culture – a term that describes normalized attitudes and behaviours that encourage, minimize, or trivialize sexual violence. Using a pyramid model, participants learn about these attitudes and behaviours, gain understanding of the normalization process and impacts on society, while using scenarios to further explore these concepts and practice potential intervention tactics.

This module focuses on Technology Facilitated Sexual Violence (TFSV), an increasingly pertinent topic in our online world. Participants are introduced to a definition of TFSV and a brief overview of the various forms. Using case studies and an intersectional lens, the myriad impacts of this violence are explored, along with the Canadian legal landscape surrounding the topic and useful tools for being an active bystander. Finally, to promote equal digital citizenship, the module offers resources for support that survivors can engage with both on- and off-campus.

About the Sexual Assault Resource Centre

Founded in 2013, Concordia’s Sexual Assault Resource Centre (SARC) is the university’s dedicated resource for support, response, prevention and education related to sexual violence and intimate partner violence. Serving as the first point of contact for students, staff and faculty, SARC provides confidential, non-judgmental support and coordinates resources tailored to each situation. Drawing on experience supporting survivors and leading prevention initiatives, the team developed It Takes All of Us to provide practical, accessible education on sexual violence prevention.
