Before the internship

Students

Before beginning your internship:

• Complete the required internship safety training.
• Review and sign your Internship Workplace Hazards Report with your internship coordinator.
• Familiarize yourself with your rights and responsibilities under Quebec’s Occupational Health and Safety Act.
• Review any workplace hazards identified for your placement.

Internship coordinators

Before sending a student to an internship site:

• Ensure the internship site has completed the Internship Workplace Safety Assessment process.
• Confirm that the site is approved or complete the assessment process for new sites.
• Review the student’s tasks and workplace hazards before the internship begins.
• Ensure students have access to the appropriate health and safety resources.

Host organizations

Before hosting a Concordia student:

• Complete the Internship Workplace Safety Assessment.
• Identify workplace hazards and the measures in place to control them.
• Prepare any required health and safety training and personal protective equipment.

During the internship

Students

During your internship:

• Follow your host organization’s health and safety procedures.
• Use personal protective equipment as required.
• Ask questions if you are unsure how to perform a task safely.
• Report unsafe work practices to your internship coordinator, supervisor or Environmental Health and Safety.

Internship coordinators

During the internship:

• Conduct site visits when required.
• Support students throughout their placements.
• Follow up on health and safety concerns, as needed.

Host organizations

During the internship:

• Inform students about the risks associated with their work.
• Provide the training required to perform assigned tasks safely.
• Ensure students follow workplace health and safety procedures.
• Encourage students to raise questions and report health and safety concerns.
• Make the workplace available for site visits by Concordia, when required.

Reporting an injury, near-miss or psychosocial situation

All injuries, near-misses and psychosocial situations that occur during a Concordia internship must be reported promptly.

Students who experience an injury or near-miss during their internship must complete Concordia’s Injury/Near-Miss Report and notify the internship coordinator or supervisor.

Host organizations should ensure that any injury or near-miss involving a Concordia student is reported to the university.

Students experiencing sexual or psychological harassment, or seeking information about available supports, should contact their internship coordinator or supervisor or access Concordia’s Sexual Assault Resource Centre or the Office of Rights and Responsibilities.

Training

Students are required to complete Concordia’s internship safety training on Moodle before beginning their first internship.
