Using Microsoft Copilot Chat for your studies
Generative AI can help you brainstorm ideas, understand complex topics, summarize information and improve your writing. If you are using Generative AI for your studies, Concordia recommends Microsoft Copilot Chat as the first-choice tool in order to protect your data.
When you sign in with your Concordia account, your prompts and responses are protected by Microsoft's enterprise data protection and are not used to train foundation AI models.
Copilot Chat is available to all Concordia students through your university Microsoft 365 account.
To receive these protections, be sure to sign in with your Concordia account, not a personal Microsoft account (for example, one using a Hotmail, Outlook or Live address).
How Copilot Chat can help
Depending on what is permitted in your courses, you can use Copilot Chat to:
- explain or summarize concepts, articles and course materials
- brainstorm ideas for assignments and projects
- improve the clarity, tone and readability of your writing
- generate study questions or practice activities
- organize information and plan your work
- explore different approaches to a question or problem
Copilot Chat works with the information you provide in the chat and can also search the web. Some additional Copilot features within Microsoft 365 applications may require a separate licence.
Use AI responsibly
Always follow your course syllabus and your instructor’s instructions about whether and how GenAI tools may be used.
You must also follow Concordia’s policies and guidelines, including those related to:
Do not enter sensitive personal, confidential or restricted information into an AI tool unless its use is explicitly permitted.
AI-generated content may also contain errors, omissions or misleading information. Always review and verify the content before using it in your work.
What about other GenAI tools?
You may use tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity where permitted. However, the protections provided through your Concordia account do not apply when you use another service or sign in with a personal account. For university-related activities, use Copilot Chat whenever possible.
