Preventing the spread of flu, respiratory illnesses and gastroenteritis
Illnesses such as colds, the flu, COVID-19 and gastroenteritis are common, and can spread quickly through close contact, respiratory droplets and contact with contaminated surfaces. Crowded indoor spaces increase the risk of transmission.
For guidance on symptoms, self-care and when to seek medical attention, consult the Government of Quebec website.
The best way to prevent the spread of these illnesses is to stay home if you’re sick.
If you’re feeling unwell, the short-term absence form lets you submit a request for short-term medical accommodations from your classes without a medical note. For longer-term absences, learn more about academic accommodation requests.
Other ways to help reduce the spread of illness include:
- Stay up to date with recommended vaccinations
- Wash your hands regularly
- Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue
- Cough or sneeze into your elbow
- Wear a mask as appropriate (for example, in crowded indoor spaces or if you have symptoms)
