Concordia receives $500,000 from RBC to expand access to inclusive experiential learning

A new $500,000 gift to the Campaign for Concordia: Next-Gen Now from Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) will help expand the Beat the Odds (BTO) internship program — an inclusive experiential learning initiative designed to provide paid, flexible work opportunities for students from equity-deserving groups.
The donation builds on RBC’s original $1-million contribution to Concordia in 2021. The renewed funding will help support undergraduate students from all faculties through personalized, supported internships that build confidence and workplace skills.
“We are grateful to RBC for this renewed investment in the Beat the Odds program, which reflects our shared commitment to creating more equitable access to career-building opportunities,” says Concordia President Graham Carr. “Through this support, we can better equip underserved students with the tools they need to succeed in a competitive employment landscape and the opportunity to demonstrate the value they can bring to the workforce of tomorrow.”
Adds Marjolaine Hudon, Regional President of RBC in Quebec: “At RBC, we believe that creating meaningful pathways for young people is key to fostering inclusive prosperity. Beat the Odds is a program that helps level the playing field for students who might not otherwise access this kind of work-integrated learning. We are proud to extend our support and continue working with Concordia to empower the next generation of leaders.”
Developed by Concordia’s Office of Experiential Learning (EL), BTO offers fully funded internships tailored to students’ academic and career goals. Placements range from short-term, observational roles to more advanced internships involving complex, skills-based tasks. Internships may be part-time or full-time and are available in English, French or bilingual workplaces.
The program is designed with flexibility and wraparound support in mind, including access to mentorship, workshops and dedicated coordination. It specifically targets students who face systemic barriers to employment — offering them a structured pathway into the professional world.
“Beat the Odds was created with the understanding that experiential learning can have the greatest impact on students who begin university at a disadvantage,” says Cherine Zananiri, Concordia’s director of Experiential Learning and the Institute for Co-operative Education.
“Our team works closely with students and host organizations to ensure that the experience is inclusive, supportive and meaningful. We are grateful for RBC’s continued support in helping us grow this essential program.”
Paul Chesser, BA 94, GrDip 97, vice-president of Advancement, underscores the impact of RBC’s sustained engagement: “RBC’s leadership in supporting inclusive education and student success continues to make a profound difference at Concordia. This latest gift ensures that more of our students can access transformative learning experiences that open doors and build brighter futures.”
