Open House is on Saturday, October 28, and Matthew Stiegemeyer, Concordia's director of Student Recruitment, can already sense the excitement in the air.

“We’re riding high on a spike in the number of prospective students from around the world who are very interested in studying here,” he says.

“And we’re celebrating the fact that Montreal was named the best student city on the planet this year — stealing the top spot from Paris. We have a lot to be proud of and we want to share that.”

A tailored plan of action

Everyone who registers for Open House will receive a personalized itinerary designed to help them make the most of the day’s program, which includes Portfolio Day for future fine arts students.

“We consistently get feedback that students and their families really appreciate the tailored approach,” says Savvy Papayiannis, recruitment manager. With upwards of 5,000 visitors expected and a ton of activities taking place, there’s a lot of excitement.

“One of our key jobs is to help visitors make those valuable connections and come away having learned what they want for their future and where they see themselves at Concordia.”

Another benefit of attending Open House is getting a sense of how Concordia integrates career planning services into the undergraduate experience.

“We want to demonstrate the university’s commitment to helping students with job and research opportunities that will extend even beyond the three or four years they spend as undergraduates,” says Stiegemeyer, adding that Open House offers one-on-one consultations with a career advisor.

Open House online

Recruiters who are travelling the globe this fall to meet with future Concordians recognize that some international students won’t be able to make the trip to Montreal for Open House. The plan is to reach out online throughout the day, Stiegemeyer explains.

“We experimented with a ‘virtual’ Open House last year — making our recruiters available to respond to admissions questions in real time. We also went live on Facebook to give people a sense of the vibe on campus.”

The response was incredibly positive.

“Interest in Concordia is continuing to build around the world,” Stiegemeyer says.

“It’s important to let prospective students see what the campus is like and give them the opportunity to see what all the fuss is about. This makes them better informed when they’re making their decision and better connected with the university early on in the admissions process.”
