Julie Favreau, who recently completed her MFA in Studio Arts (Sculpture) at Concordia University, has received a 2012 Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Fellowship in Contemporary Art Fellowship. The two-year award, valued at approximately $55,000, will allow her to develop her professional practice, undertake and exhibit her research/creation and broaden her teaching experience.

The announcement was made on May 3, 2012, at the opening of the fellowship exhibit by inaugural 2010 Concordia winner Steve Bates.

"I'd like to express my gratitude to Claudine and Stephen Bronfman for their generous contribution to my ongoing journey of research and creation," said Favreau. "This fellowship will enable me to continue the work I started with my master's while developing my professional practice."

Favreau's practice is greatly influenced by experimental theatre and dance. Her projects take on different forms such as video art, installation, sculpture, performance and photography. Through the use of gesture and sites, her work examines our relationship to psychologically and spiritually charged representations.

She's presented her work in many contexts, including exhibitions, festivals and stage performances. Her recent shows and research projects include the Québec Triennial 2011, In Limbo-Compagnie de Brune, Tangente (2012) and the Goodwater Gallery in Toronto (2010). She is currently working on the Montreal/Brooklyn-Clark Gallery/Parker's Box collective exhibition project, which will be shown in 2012-13.

During her time at Concordia, Favreau attended four residencies. The most recent was in Paris at the Couvent des Récollets in Paris, in an exchange with Montreal's Darling Foundry-Quartier Ephémère. She has also received several grants and awards, including from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Most recently, she was named to the long list of the Sobey Art Award, a pre-eminent award for Canadian contemporary art.
