The Centre for the Study of Learning and Performance (CSLP) congratulates member Sunny Man Chu Lau on the publication of a new article in the journal Language Awareness.
Co-authored with Geneviève Brisson, Danièle Moore, and Magali Forte, the article, Reading plurilingual texts: children's critical engagement with unfamiliar languages and eco-social issues, examines how Grade 6 students in Quebec navigated texts containing unfamiliar languages and how they drew on existing knowledge, reading strategies, and critical thinking skills to make meaning.
The study forms part of a broader research project that brings together French- and English-language educators to build linguistic and curricular bridges across Canada's two official languages while fostering deeper engagement with eco-social issues. Using a plurilingual comprehension task completed without teacher guidance, the researchers explored how students responded to unfamiliar language elements and story development, paying particular attention to moments when learners actively negotiated meaning across linguistic boundaries.
The findings suggest that students can compare and interpret unfamiliar language structures, transferring linguistic and visual reading strategies, and exercising critical judgement about the issues addressed in a text. The research contributes to a growing body of work demonstrating the educational value of plurilingual approaches and their potential to support both language development and critical literacy.
The publication arrives just ahead of PLURI-ED-J-2: Plurilingualism in Action – Perspectives, Resources and Practices, a symposium taking place on June 11, 2026, at Concordia University's 4th Space and online via livestream.
Designed as a meeting point between research and practice, PLURI-ED-J-2 is a joint initiative of the CSLP, CEAP UQAM, McGill University’s Plurilingual Lab, and the Centre for Integrated Plurilingual Teaching and Learning (CIPTL), where Lau is the director.
The event will showcase research-based models, teaching and learning resources, workshops, and practical strategies for implementing plurilingual approaches across a variety of educational settings.
Lau is among the symposium presenters and will co-lead a workshop with Geneviève Brisson entitled Enquête plurilingue: Understanding and Exploring Integrated Plurilingual Texts. The session will provide participants with an opportunity to explore plurilingual texts and consider how such approaches can be applied in educational contexts. The full programme is included below. You may still register to attend the conference online.
The conference is part of a broader knowledge mobilization initiative led by CSLP co-director Diane Querrien, whose work on plurilingualism in education has brought together researchers and practitioners from across Quebec and beyond.
Dr. Sunny Man Chu Lau, Full Professor in the School of Education at Bishop’s University, is Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Integrated Plurilingual Teaching and Learning.
