A new edited volume co-led by Sunny Man Chu Lau, a member of CSLP, will be released by Bloomsbury Publishing, with pre-orders opening on April 30, 2026.
Co-edited by Lau and Zhongfeng Tian, Translanguaging in action in English-medium classrooms: A resource book for teachers brings together international perspectives on translanguaging pedagogy across a wide range of educational contexts.
The volume offers research-informed and practice-oriented approaches to translanguaging in TESOL, with contributions from scholars across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. It examines both the possibilities and challenges of implementing equitable and effective language teaching practices, while supporting educators in developing concrete, context-sensitive strategies for their classrooms.
In addition to her role as co-editor, Lau contributes two chapters to the book. In collaboration with Phelippe Oliveira (Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil), she co-authors “Translanguaging as a decolonial option: Exploring curricular cracks for critical literacy in EFL classrooms,” which explores how translanguaging can support critical literacy through a decolonial lens. She also co-authors, with Joanna Rowe (Kativik Ilisarniliriniq School Board, Canada), “Aware-explore-apply strengths model: Translanguaging and transknowledging for critical embodied engagement,” presenting a pedagogical model that integrates translanguaging and transknowledging to foster deeper learner engagement.
The book begins by addressing foundational questions such as what translanguaging is as both a theory and pedagogy, and why it matters in TESOL. It then explores applications across educational levels—from elementary and secondary classrooms to teacher education—providing both conceptual grounding and practical examples.
Designed as an accessible resource, the volume includes case studies, classroom-based applications, and self-guided professional development tools, making it particularly valuable for educators seeking to rethink and redesign their teaching practices in linguistically diverse settings.
Lau is a Full Professor in the School of Education at Bishop’s University and holds a Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Integrated Plurilingual Teaching and Learning.
