Generative AI is currently developing and becoming accessible at a rate that warrants discussion about its role in the university classroom. In specific, ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, can answer questions and follow-up questions by providing textual (e.g., written summary) and code-based responses (e.g., HTML, Python). Therefore, there is a range of impacts that ChatGPT may have on your classroom, ranging from no impact to complete transformation of lessons and discussions. Regardless of ChatGPT’s effect on your curriculum, we recommend being aware of what can be done with— or in response to ChatGPT and its associated affordances.
Given the wide range of ways in which this technology can be leveraged for pedagogical use, including concerns about academic dishonesty, this faculty interest group aims to:
explore ways that ChatGPT might be used or is being used in pedagogy in higher education; and
open up the discussion for faculty to share their interest, concerns, perspectives, and uses of ChatGPT.
