Milieux's Indigenous Futures research cluster presents its first Wikipedia Edit-a-thon

The Indigenous Futures research cluster invites you to participate in their first-ever Wikipedia Edit-a-thon on the theme of Indigenous media artists in North America and the Pacific. Join us for a communal updating of Wikipedia entries about Indigenous media artists, including cis and transgender women and men, as well as queer, non-binary and Two-Spirited people.

We will provide tutorials for beginner Wikipedians, support and research materials for editing Wikipedia articles, and build capacity for Indigenous participants to manage and determine how we represent our cultures and communities in cyberspace.

Amber Berson, the Canadian ambassador for the Art+Feminism Wikipedia project, will lead the Wikipedia tutorial. The tutorial will be followed by a presentation from Indigenous writer, publisher, and professor Greg Younging, author of Elements of Indigenous Style: A Guide for Writing By and About Indigenous Peoples. Younging will discuss language bias and guidelines for writing about Indigenous peoples in an appropriate and respectful manner.

This workshop is organized by the Indigenous Futures research cluster with the guidance and aid of Art+Feminism, a campaign improving coverage of cis and transgender women, non-binary folks, feminism and the arts on Wikipedia. If you can bring your laptop and power cord, please do! We also encourage you to bring ideas for entries that need updating or creation. A limited number of computer stations will be available and we will provide a list of entries that need updating or creation at the event! For the editing-averse, we welcome you to stop by to have a coffee and show your support.

Public transit and accessibility information

Concordia’s Engineering, Computer Science and Visual Arts Integrated Complex (EV Building) is located directly above Guy-Concordia metro station on the green line. Exit the station following signs for Concordia and take the escalators or elevator to the ground level. Take the elevators located to the left of the escalators to the 11th floor.

The event space is wheelchair accessible. Gender-neutral washrooms are available on the 11th floor.
