The FOFA Gallery and VAV Gallery are pleased to present a dynamic collection of works as part of Concordia University’s Faculty of Fine Arts Graduating Students Exhibition. The exhibition moves through both the VAV and FOFA spaces and was juried and shaped to reflect the strength and diversity of practice at the Bachelor, Master and Doctoral levels.

Concordia’s Faculty of Fine Arts is recognized nationally and internationally for its artistic and academic excellence, driven by a distinguished faculty and demonstrated by the outstanding works produced by its graduating students. This year's exhibition features media art, installation, painting, music, costume design, photography, ceramics, and sculpture. Some works are humorous and playful, others thoughtfully pay tribute to the past, yet above all, these works represent the tremendous spectrum of contemporary art practices today.

Marielle Blanc. Backwards Slide (2016-2017). Powder-coated steel, wheels, 21 x 120 x 76 inches.

EN

Marielle Blanc’s installations generate absurdist visual dialogues from encounters or confrontations between different objects. Using humor and absurdism as tools for engagement, eerie and sometimes funny tragicomic environments unfold. The artist feels that in our inherent need to make sense of things, sometimes it makes more sense to make nonsense, especially when things are turned on their heads.

FR

Dana Dal Bo. The Pool of Tears (video still) (2015). Analog video installation, mirror. 5:00 min. Original Score by Mark Anthony Turnage. Performed by Ashley Wass (piano) and Matthew Trusler (violin). Set Design by Steve McCuen. Directors of Photography: David J. Romero and Rafael Favero.

EN

Dana Dal Bo’s video The Pool of Tears celebrates the 150th anniversary of Alice in Wonderland, and was featured in The International Motion Festival in Cyprus and the Pharos Arts Foundation in 2015. The video switches between HD and PXL 2000—a video camera with a plastic lens designed by Fisher Price in the 1980s. Dal Bo’s multidisciplinary practice is interested in how constructions of identity are influenced by popular culture, social media, and medicine.

FR

Rihab Essayh. Jardin Automate (detail) (2017). Mylar (reflective, translucent and frosted), Coroplast, Japanese paper, projection, sound. Dimensions variable.

EN

Rihab Essayh’s installation Jardin Automate mimics the structure of plants found in a botanical garden, yet its transparent and artificial materiality is inspired by the digital. Viewers are enveloped in a technological environment, experiencing nature in the contexts of future technologies and artificial intelligence. Essayh’s inspiration for this environment came from questioning how plants are rendered through digital animation technologies—a crisscross of flat images, so to speak—and strategically harnesses unnatural materials like Mylar, acetate, coroplast, and acrylic.

FR

Artist Gabriel Evangelista. His sound work Round Midnight (2017) [Music by Thelonious Monk; arranged and performed by Gabriel Evangelista; recorded at Oscar Peterson Hall, Concordia University; recorded and mixed by Didier Bergeron] is featured in the FOFA Gallery's Main Space.

EN

Gabriel Evangelista is a composer, musical director, pianist, percussionist, and educator based in Montreal. His arrangement of Thelonious Monk’s jazz composition “Round Midnight” (1944) is part of a suite of original solo arrangements of jazz standards, with a strong focus on reharmonization. Evangelista’s musical background includes Western classical music, Balinese Gamelan, Jazz, Flamenco, and Hispano-Caribbean popular music.

FR

Omar Al Faleh. Temporal Fractals (2016). Installation view.

EN

Omar Al Faleh’s interactive installation Temporal Fractals is an experiment in multiple time scales within a physical space—a fragmentation of space-time. The space is comprised of ceiling-mounted screens that resemble fragments of a shattered mirror, each displaying different synthesized versions of a live video feed of the space, according to different time scales. The diverse components of the installation—the screens, the viewer, the gallery setting—ultimately create a collective and engaging experience of space.

FR

Adam Gunn. Trying to Keep My Shit Together (2016). Oil on wood panel. 37” x 38.5” (irregular dimensions).
Adam Gunn. Anything, Anytime, Anyplace, For no Reason at All (2017). Oil on wood panel. 57.5” x 57” (irregular dimensions).

EN

Adam Gunn’s painting practice has grown out of a subversion of the still life genre. Working spontaneously, his rounded, organically-shaped paintings lend themselves well to their improvised subject matter. The depicted sense of movement and precariousness reflects the unplanned process by which these paintings unfold. Gunn’s representational processes of growth, creation, and change symbolize complicated states of order.

FR

Cheyenne Jenkins. Res House from the series Slow 17 (2017). Digital photograph. 30" x 20".

EN

Cheyenne Jenkins’ photographic series Slow 17 documents spaces and ruins along Ontario’s Highway 17, remnants of great Canadian road trips. In turn, the series reflects the gradual transformation of urbanization, nature turned city, camping made urban, events turned memory. The artist’s exploration of roads and the destinations along them stand in for notions of freedom and vastness, nostalgic contemplations of Canadian explorations gone by, ultimately, a negotiation of Canadian identity, memory, and experience.

FR

mil. ess sense (2017). Installation series. Cotton ikat weavings, wooden supports, hand printed and found materials, water. Dimensions variable.

EN

Working with various forms of collage and installation art, mil’s practice bounces between altering found objects or textiles, on which they often apply painted and dyed techniques, and constructing sculptural supports for installations. The sculptural series ess sense comprises material investigations inspired by the transitional qualities of water. Evoking an ethereal and essential aura, these overlapping constructions embrace potential transformation, mirroring the way fluid, natural forms shift and reflect their surroundings.

FR

Kate Puxley. The Garden (2017). Plaster, muskrat and mouse skins, antlers, pine trees, paint.

EN

Kate Puxley’s work investigates the human and non-human animal, specifically the use of the latter by the former in representations and exertions of power. Puxley’s combined background as an artist and a trained taxidermist lends itself to beautiful and grotesque explorations of mythological theatrical scenes. For this project, the artist explores the violence and predatory mentality ingrained in a hunter’s relationship to their prey, and subsequent notions of power, death, and excitement inherent to the romance of the hunt, or, the erotic predatory gaze.

FR

Katherine Shriver. Silver Fold (2017). Handwoven glass beads, towel bar, acrylic paint on panel. 30" x 30".

EN

Kathryn Shriver’s current work melds the language of painting and various forms of craft. Inspired by painting’s relationship with textiles (the canvas as both a fabric and surface), Shriver introduced hand-woven, beaded textiles into the surfaces, in turn creating assembled pieces that sit between craft objects, painting, and sculpture. The resulting explorations negotiate the historical and material properties of beadwork, raising notions of value (labour, material worth, and economic viability), fashion (taste, commodity, and class), and design (strategies of display in the gallery, or otherwise).

FR

Video Pistoletto 6112 (2017). Inkjet on Paper. 42" x 28".

EN

Inspired by the mirror-breaking performances of Italian artist Michelangelo Pistoletto, Oli Sorenson’s series Video Pistoletto documents the patterns of broken LCD video screens. In their damaged state, these technologies become useless, their materiality instead transformed into unique, unpredictable artefacts. Sorenson’s practice blurs the distinctions between production and re-production, originals and multiples, through media performances and artistic collaborations.

FR

Ariel St-Louis Lamoureux. King of Heart (2016). Full costume, human-scale. Various fabrics, plastics, felt, synthetic wadding. Photo: Dan Haber.

EN

Ariel St-Louis Lamoureux’s exhibited costumes are remnants from the Department of Theatre’s 2016 production of Alice in Wonderland, which explored a young girl’s journey into the imaginary. Because theatre is an ephemeral art, its scenography and costumes serve as traces of the original theater experience. These costumes play on notions of transformation and imagination with popular culture references, exhibited alongside their original illustrations and sources of inspiration.

FR

Seonjeong Yi. No One Knows What My Mind Was Like: Visual Storytelling of Soon-ak Kim Who Was a Former 'Comfort Women' Military Sex-Slave (video still) (2017). 4:45 min.

EN

Seonjeong Yi’s research project traces the life-story of Soon-ak Kim, a former “comfort woman,” or sex slave, in South Korea during the Pacific war. Histories of these women are often omitted from cultural institutions and public media, spurring Yi to develop an educational program with the Heeum Museum centered on victims’ trauma and experience. The work, accompanying educational components, and performance explore the lived experience of Soon-ak Kim, prioritizing her voice while recounting a complex history.

FR

Trevor Baird. Personal Tiles (2017). Porcelain, underglaze, wooden frame. 45" x 30”.
Trevor Baird. Erotic Fantasy Skating (2017). Porcelain and underglaze. 23" x 10" x 10”.

EN

Trevor Baird’s work relies heavily on the histories of function, decoration, labour and temporality. The presentation of Personal Tiles and Erotic Fantasy Skating underscores his interest in the use of ceramics as an architectural and functional building material as well as a vulnerable artistic medium, creating a poignant connection between the body and the functional object.

FR

MJ Daines. Becky (2017). Handwoven linen, recycled cotton sweater, paint. 2.5' x 4.5' x 2.5'.

EN

Through slow and deliberate action, MJ Daines transforms fibre into thread, thread into structure, and structure into space. She creates objects that reflect the contemplative space she constructs for herself through these rituals of making. Becky is the result of a research-creation project in which Daines, working with contemporary tools and recycled materials to re-imagine ancient technologies and communication strategies, envisions herself as a student of the late textile artist and printmaker, Anni Albers.

FR

Where it Springs (2017). Oil on canvas. 60" x 60".

EN

Caroline Deschênes engages in a dialogue between intuitive impulses and conscious manipulations of personal symbolism that, through introspective moments, renders emotion, atmosphere and mood. Her paintings expand on her personal experiences of human nature and sexuality, as well as our capacities for success and failure. Where it Springs exemplifies her tendency to sculpt imagery through thin layers of paint, allowing the abstract qualities of light and dark to organize her compositions.

FR

naakita feldman-kiss. Grandma’s Crystal Flowers (2016). Two-channel video installation. 105 min.

EN

Grandma’s Crystal Flowers offers a glimpse into an intimate conversation between three generations of a maternal line. Three women speak about home and belonging, race and identity, history, their shared lineage, and the intersections of their personal experiences. Their conversation highlights the differing and converging experiences of being an immigrant, first-generation, or second-generation person in Canada. In this work, naakita feldman-kiss examines what it is to be a grandmother, mother, daughter and granddaughter, both respectively and collectively.

FR

Dina Georgaros. Untitled II (detail) (2017). Human hair.

EN

Dina Georgaros pursues art making from the perspective of her interest in materiality and formalist concepts. With a background in drawing, her approach is largely based on abstract non-figurative representations of form, line, quality, and texture, frequently recalling the fineness of hair. Untitled II employs hair as a medium and not only as a method of preserving one’s personal heritage and sustaining what is naturally discarded.

FR

Narges Haghighat. The Hoopoe And the Owls (video still) (2017). Animated film. 3:55 min.
Narges Haghighat. The Hoopoe And the Owls (video still) (2017). Animated film. 3:55 min.

EN

Growing up, Narges Haghighat saw many people killed for speaking the truth and expressing their opinions. She witnessed parents and young people choosing to remain silent, not wanting to cause any harm to themselves or to their families and friends. The Hoopoe And The Owls speaks, not only for Haghighat, but also for young people around the world who live in repressive societies and who would like to share their experiences, stories, emotions, lifestyles, beliefs, and feelings with others.

FR

Cindy Hill. Each Other (2017). Nylon, wood, Mylar, acrylic paint, spray paint, rope on canvas, zipper on vinyl, eyehook on vinyl. Dimensions variable.

EN

In Each Other, Cindy Hill explores painting as a mode of reading that extends itself beyond the use of brushes, canvas, and coloured substances. Working in expanded fields, her practice uses assemblage and intuitive processes to generate unexpected associative meanings through the manipulation of found object and materials. This work questions material relationships, constructed environments, and the deconstruction of the image as a physical object.

FR

The Ultimate Emotion (video still) (2017). Video. 4:42 min.
Laïla Mestari. The Ultimate Emotion (video still) (2017). Video. 4:42 min.

EN

Laïla Mestari’s The Ultimate Emotion tells the story of a small cubic world of little importance. Emerging from, and eventually returning to, nothingness, its inhabitants are multiple stand-ins for her. Continuously performing gestures inspired by a human’s daily life, these selves are curious and actively seeking joy, the ultimate emotion. If they don’t find it they die.

FR

Eva-Loan. Interlock (2016). Multi-media installation.

EN

Influenced by her studies in art history, questions of gender, class, and race are central to Eva-Loan’s art practice. Her concerns take shape primarily through sculpture, but also through the use of photography. In Interlock, two sculptures and a photograph are positioned in a dialogue with each other in such a way that the installation is vaguely reminiscent of a domestic interior.

FR

Patterns of Hope (2017). Ceramic and cloth sculptures. Dimensions variable.

EN

Amanda Ruiz Méndez’s Patterns of Hope is an installation that contains a variety of ceramic and cloth dolls depicting a fictional scenario: a landscape made by women-mountains who are the result of the expansion of an indigenous revolution. Zapatista women have become as solid as mountains, and their shape has been replicated in order to multiply their force, however, nobody knows if the women became mountains or if the mountains started to move as the women’s skirts do.

FR

Shirley is a hand-made book consisting of 74 archival family images paired with photographs taken during the winter of 2016. Kira Walz writes, “When I was young, my grandmother visited my family a lot; when I was growing up she developed dementia; when I was older and my own person she passed away.” Walz uses the photographs that she has selected as an act of remembrance and celebration, as well as an exploration of time and opportunity lost.

FR
