Throughout the course of our programs, students can take on internships, giving them valuable work experience in the field before graduation.
Paid internships
Opportunities for paid internships in journalism and related fields are available to all students on a competitive basis through our site Journalism Opportunities. Former students have interned at a plethora of sites, including The Montreal Gazette, Sportsnet, CTV, The Eastern Door and CJAD. Many students have also won the prestigious CBC News Joan Donaldson Scholarship, an intensive four-month paid internship at one or more locations within CBC News and Centres. Media outlets can submit job positions to be posted.
Internships for credit
Upper-year undergraduate students may undertake a practicum at a recognized media outlet, under the supervision of a senior journalist and with permission of the Department’s undergraduate program director for course credit (JOUR 450, Journalism Practicum).
Co-op program
The Co-op program gives undergraduate journalism students the opportunity to alternate periods of full-time academic study with periods of paid, full-time work terms at participating media outlets in Montreal and other parts of Canada. Co-op students graduate with job-search skills, enhanced personal and professional skills as well as a year’s worth of work experience in journalism or related fields.
