Awards and Scholarships

Our department offers a variety of scholarships and donor awards to support our students, as well as numerous teaching and research assistantships that students can undertake throughout their studies.

Bell Media Scholarship

One Undergraduate Scholarship is granted through competition, based on academic merit, among students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Journalism. Applicants must have successfully completed courses in radio journalism at the University, such as Radio Newsroom (JOUR 330) or Advances Radio News (JOUR 530). The Scholarships are open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents only.

Reader's Digest Scholarship in Journalism

To award a full-time undergraduate student entering their first year of a  Bachelor of Arts (BA) in one of the following programs: Specialization in Journalism, Specialization in Communications and Journalism, Major in Journalism. Recommendation made by a committee of the Department of Journalism based on academic merit during the first three semesters of CEGEP or equivalent and the students potential for a career in journalism, based upon their portfolio submission.

Sportsnet Scholarship in Communication Studies and Journalism

One Undergraduate Scholarship is granted through competition, based on academic merit and personal statements. Applicants must be completed at least one semester and are enrolled in any of the Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Graduate Diploma programs offered by the Department of Journalism or the Department of Communication Studies. Applicants must be submit a letter of intent, expressing their interest in sports journalism or sports broadcasting, explaining how this scholarship will help in the pursuit of their studies and the fulfillment of their personal and professional aspirations. The Scholarships are open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents and international students. Priority will be given to students who are members of under-represented groups (i.e. aboriginal peoples, visible minorities, women and persons with disabilities).                    

Frank B. Walker- 2nd year students

To award a deserving undergraduate student in Journalism who has completed their 1st year. The award is to encourage and recognize excellence in writing.

Frank B. Walker – 3rd year students

To award a deserving undergraduate student in Journalism who has completed their 2nd year. The award is to encourage and recognize excellence in writing.

Bob McDevitt 

To award a deserving full-time undergraduate student in Journalism who is entering the first year of undergraduate studies. Recommendation made by a committee of the Department which will take into consideration the following material, extracted from the student's application: Transcript of marks, the 'letter of intent', English proficiency scores.

Teaching Assistant Award in Journalism 

Intended for Undergraduate students who work as a Teaching Assistant at the Undergraduate level. Candidates must be in their second or third year of study, with a minimum GPA of 3.00. Candidates will have developed innovative techniques for technology or learning methodologies, and will have received positive feedback from student evaluations. Published pieces of work will also be considered during the candidate selection process.

Robert Gibbens Memorial Entrance Scholarship

One Undergraduate Scholarship is granted through competition, to a full-time students admitted in a course of study leading to a Bachelor's of Art in Journalism. The Scholarships are open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents and international students.

Mike King

One Undergraduate Scholarship is granted through competition to a full-time student enrolled in a course of study leading to a Bachelor of Arts (BA) of Arts with a major in Journalism. Preference given to a student who shows a committed preference for print or internet focused journalism. Candidates must have completed at least twenty-four (24) credits in Journalism. The Scholarship is open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents only.

Lew Harris

To award a deserving full-time undergraduate student in Journalism who is finishing 2nd year and will take into account performance and work submitted while successfully completing JOUR 302, Reporting Methods.

John W. Sancton

This undergraduate Scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time students who have completed one term of full-time studies in the Dept of Journalism, with satisfactory academic standing. Preference given to students who have published in community newspapers (including university newspapers) or who have an interest in community news. Selection is made on the basis of academic merit and personal statements. Applicants must submit a letter of intent.

Ross Perigoe

One Undergraduate Scholarship is granted through competition, based on academic merit, among students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Journalism, with preference to those who are members of the Loyola International College. Candidates may be full or part-time students who have completed at least 30 credits of undergraduate Journalism courses at Concordia University. The Scholarships are open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents and international students.

The Lorne and Ann Tierney Memorial Award in Journalism

This entrance scholarship is to fund  Full-time in the Department of Journalism who is entering the first year of undergraduate studies. Priority granted to students who meet as many of the following criteria possible: Acceptance to University varsity level team; Past or present involvement in sports; Demonstrated interest in sports journalism or sports broadcasting. The Scholarships are open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents and international students.

Canadian Women's Press Club

To award a Full-time or Part-time student in the Department of Journalism who have completed their first year and are continuing in the Journalism program. Recommendation made by a committee of the Department based on samples of the students work and scholarship integrity and dedication to the profession of journalism.  

Cynthia Gunn

Full-time or Part-time students in the Department of Journalism entering their second or third year.

Lindsay Crysler

To award a deserving full-time undergraduate student in Journalism who is entering the first year of undergraduate studies. Recommendation made by a committee of the Department which will take into consideration the following material, extracted from the student's application: Transcript of marks, the 'letter of intent', the English proficiency scores.

Don McGillivray

Two Undergraduate Scholarships are granted through competition to full-time and part-time students enrolled in a course of study leading to a Bachelor of Arts (BA), major or specialization in Journalism. Applicants must submit one example of explanatory journalism: a story, column or editorial that explains to readers some complicated matter in easy -to-understand terms. Writing examples could be in any field, including but not limited to: government law or policy, scientific  achievement, economic or financial matters, health or medical treatment or discovery or on any topic of general or public interest. (Note: eligible pieces of writing can include class assignments and student or community publications. Submissions that were produced during a paid employment period or summer internship are eligible but must be clearly identified as such and will be treated as professional work). The Scholarships are open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents and international students.

The Michael O'Hearn and Martin O'Connor Student Journalist Award

The award was established in memory of Michael O’Hearn and Martin O’Connor, who passed away in a car accident in 1974. At the time, O’Hearn and O’Connor were editor-in-chief and news editor, respectively, of Loyola News, a student-run newspaper. Graduates with ties to the publication reunited in November 2014 and announced their intention to establish the award to mark the 40th anniversary of O’Hearn and O’Connor’s passing and encourage budding journalists.

 

Enn Raudsepp Graduate Diploma in Journalism Entrance Scholarship

This scholarship supports and encourages academic excellence and is awarded to the Diploma student who shows the most improvement during the Summer term.

James A. Stewart Memorial Scholarship in Journalism

This scholarship, named in memory of the former faculty member, James Alexander Stewart, is awarded to the Diploma student with the highest CGPA at the end of the Fall term. 

Philip Fisher Graduate Diploma Bursary

This bursary was established by The Gazette to honour the former chairman of the Southam newspaper company who was a long-time supporter of journalism education. Criteria for this bursary are: scholarship; potential for a career in journalism; demonstrated commitment to journalism; and financial need.

Susan Carson Memorial Bursary

This bursary was established to honour a committed and courageous journalist whose work at the Montreal Star and The Gazette touched many people. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic achievement combined with demonstrated financial need and must also demonstrate the highest ideals, concern for human kind and qualities of citizenship. 

Students are automatically considered for all entrance graduate awards when they apply to Concordia, provided they meet eligibility criteria. No separate application is required.
