At the beginning of every academic year, the Association francophone pour le savoir (Acfas) organizes a two-day research-focused event with a participating provincial university. For the first time, Concordia will host the French-language professional development gathering, called the Journées de la relève en recherche (J2R).

J2R is devoted to providing graduate and postgraduate researchers with training and networking opportunities to further enhance Quebec’s contribution to scientific and academic development.

Acfas is a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of research in Quebec and across the Canadian Francophonie. It works with academic institutions and the research community in partnership with provincial media channels to promote innovation and research in Quebec.

“We are proud to host the 2019 J2R,” says Christophe Guy, vice-president of research and graduate studies.

“This event reinforces Concordia’s commitment to promoting graduate research and enhances our position as a key partner within Quebec’s greater academic ecosystem and society. We look forward to strengthening our ties with our peers and inspiring new avenues of collaboration.”

J2R is designed to support and inspire graduate students across all disciplines. It will feature over 20 activities, including workshops, roundtables, luncheons, keynote speakers and entertainment. Topics will include thesis development, professional integration, scientific popularization and more.

The event begins October 24 and ends with a writing retreat on October 26.

Register for free

Concordia grad students can register for free through the Graduate and Professional Skills (GradProSkills) program. Participation in the supplementary writing retreat requires paying a fee.

Paula Wood-Adams, dean of graduate studies, is pleased the university is covering the registration costs for these Concordians.

“Our grad students are among the best in the province. To enable them to participate in J2R reflects our commitment to furthering their academic and professional development while showcasing their research to the larger community.”

Joanne Beaudoin, administrative director at the School of Graduate Studies, agrees.

“The 2019 J2R is a great opportunity for our graduate students to mix it up with their colleagues from universities across the province,” she says.

“It’s also a fun way to practice new or recently acquired French-language skills.”
