Research Assistantships in Building and Renewable Energy

Concordia has just received $10M to develop tools and strategies for zero-carbon communities and world-renowned sustainable energy technologies expert Ursula Eicker has joined the university to lead new cities-related initiatives as the Canada Excellence Research Chair for Smart, Sustainable and Resilient Cities and Communities. One main goal of the CERC is to develop an integrated urban data and modeling platform to plan zero carbon strategies for cities.

The Department of Building, Civil and Environmental Engineering now invite student applicants to support the setting up of a Next Generation Cities Living Laboratory.

We are looking for up to three students (undergraduate or graduate) with strong software engineering, computer science or system engineering skills for a range of topics:

• Support of soft- and hardware acquisition for the urban data management and simulation laboratory
• Version control for software development, server infrastructure planning and set-up
• Analyze, compare, propose and implement graphical tools for data and simulation result visualization (alternatives to Gnuplot functionality)
• Compare graphical network editors for simulation model development to a custom designed Java software framework
• Compare, propose, implement and test collaborative working software for document sharing, file repositories, open research data (Teams, office365 and others)
• Study urban sensor data communication interfaces and implement prototypes for Lorawan and other sensor data access
• Implement prototype of smart metering communication with possibility of blockchain implementation
• Analyze urban data management standards from the OASC (open and agile smart cities association), the OGC sensor thing API or other city data standardization organisations and implement a prototype data model

The duration of the positions is from July 2 to August 31, with possibility of extension, for a maximum of 35 hours per week. Immediate start is desired.

The successful applicants must be enrolled in a credit program and in good standing. Excellent students have the possibility to continue in a research Master or PhD program.

Remuneration is between $16.01/hour and $27.65/hour depending on the student’s academic level (undergraduate, master’s, or PhD).
