Artist-run centers are non-profit organizations operated by artists for artists. Promoting the values of participation, experimentation and innovation, the main activity of these institutions is to encourage the production of artworks, their promotion and research in contemporary art. All this, in spaces that exist outside of commercial structures, independent of the imperatives of the art market. They offer artists spaces, equipment, services and specialized resources, they propose reflection, training, and professionalization activities, and welcome artists for residencies and production projects. This workshop will offer insights into the artist-run milieu in Québec and how to get involved.

This workshop offers a broad introduction to the culture of artist-run centres and highlights their vital role in supporting emerging artists as they gain professional experience and find their place in the contemporary art world.

Artist-Run Rendez-Vous

This workshop is organized as part of the Artist-Run Rendez-Vous, an annual event that brings together a range of local artist-run centres and arts organizations to introduce students and recent alumni from Concordia’s Faculty of Fine Arts to the local art ecosystem. The fair itself will officially begin at 5pm next door at the Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery.

Learning alternative ways to plan and coordinate projects is an essential professional skill, especially in the arts and humanities, where projects are often emergent and hard to map out. This workshop introduces flexible project planning frameworks as supportive tools to foster iteration, collaboration, and efficiency beyond traditional productivity culture.

The first part of the session will introduce different planning frameworks, exploring how they can be tailored to suit different projects and adapted to address specific needs. We will introduce visual planning tools and provide an overview of free online project management apps. Attendees will also walk away with a template to plan and pitch projects.

Note: This workshop is intended for creative and community-based projects that need flexible planning, and is ideal for attendees in the arts and humanities fields. You will make the most of this workshop if you bring a project you are working on or want to start.

How do startups know if an idea can grow into a real business? It’s not a guess – it's math. This workshop demystifies the essentials of financial viability by showing you how to apply the same principles founders use to your own projects, side-hustles, or even your personal budget.

Forget complex models and confusing jargon; this is about understanding the core questions that determine financial health.

This workshop breaks down the essential concepts that determine if a project is built to last by connecting them directly to principles you can use in your own life. We'll move beyond theory and into practice, giving you a framework to analyze costs, understand profitability, and see how these strategies inform critical business decisions.
