Active Listening Service

Active Listening is an initiative launched by the Equity Office to respond to the impact of distressing events (such as global conflicts, natural disasters and acts of violence) on the Concordia community.

About the Service

Offered in one-on-one sessions, Active Listening is meant to provide a supportive, non-judgemental space where Concordians can feel listened to, understood and supported.

Active Listening is:

  • For all Concordians (students, faculty and staff)
  • Available in-person or virtually
  • Offered by members of the Concordia community
  • Offered at no cost

Active Listening sessions are not counselling, consulting or advising opportunities.

As a student, you can also access active listening as part of peer support at the Zen Dens.

Active Listener Network

Our long-term goal is to establish an expanded network of active listeners across the university. To do so, we are looking for staff and faculty members who would like to volunteer their time to provide active listening services.

Become an Active Listener

We are looking for colleagues who can commit to being active listeners as part of their existing work. Active listeners can allocate worktime to active listening as you and your supervisor (if applicable) see fit.

Active Listening sessions can take place virtually or in-person. Those with a closed office space can utilize them for providing active listening services.

Training and Time Committment

  • Active Listeners are required to attend a two-hour active listening training facilitated by Mark Underwood, SARC Facilitator. Those with current and relevant training may be exempted from the training.
Upcoming training sessions for 2024:
January 22, 2 – 4 p.m.
March 7, 2 – 4 p.m.
  • Once trained, Active Listeners must be available to devote a minimum of two hours to active listening per week, including:
    • Two 45-minute sessions (those who want to volunteer more time are free to do so), offered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday.
    • Community of practice meetings held Fridays from 10 to 11 a.m. to debrief and exchange.
